In Conversation: Carlos Couturier

The founding partner and director of Grupo Hábita talks the future of boutique hospitality

What would you say is the essence of boutique hospitality?

The essence of small hotels is its their human dimension: Spaces that encourage social interaction, but at the same time to comfort and intimacy, hotels where the guest is the protagonist.

What should be the baseline of the hospitality industry in the 21st century?

The hotel industry of the 21st century should be more human. The dynamism of modern life and technology isolates us, we socialise through Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram or Tinder; the hotels from the future should contribute to restore the essence of social interaction: human contact.

Service, design or destination?

In our kind of hotels, the most important thing is authenticity. We don’t build rooms, but experiences. Service, design and destination are very important, but what makes our guests come back is authenticity. Our hotels are, in a way, unique.
