Local produce and people aplenty at the sprawling market



The stalls brimming with fresh and dried fruit, cheese, vegetables and seafood at Mercado El Cardonal, the region’s main market, offer a real taste of Valparaíso. Built in 1912 using materials imported from Germany, the first floor is a colourful canvas of piled-high stands while on the second floor a selection of highly popular restaurants serve typical Chilean dishes using the best produce the market has to offer – the standout being the seafood stew.
