Mercado El Cardonal
Local produce and people aplenty at the sprawling market
The stalls brimming with fresh and dried fruit, cheese, vegetables and seafood at Mercado El Cardonal, the region’s main market, offer a real taste of Valparaíso. Built in 1912 using materials imported from Germany, the first floor is a colourful canvas of piled-high stands while on the second floor a selection of highly popular restaurants serve typical Chilean dishes using the best produce the market has to offer – the standout being the seafood stew.
