Exquisite design, thrilling itineraries and exceptional service: welcome to rail travel’s second Golden Age.

Orient Express La Dolce Vita, Italy

Stepping aboard the new Orient Express La Dolce Vita train from its dedicated lounge in Rome is like entering a gilt-edged parallel universe: the conductors’ tailored livery matches the cabins’ throwback aesthetic, and the perfectly choreographed dinner service – curated by three-Michelin-star chef Heinz Beck – is as spectacular as the scenery you’ll wind through, whether it’s the Puglian coast on one of its golf-centred itineraries or sun-dappled vineyards on the “Soul of Tuscany” route.

Britannic Explorer, United Kingdom

The Eastern & Oriental Express’s sister project, Britannic Explorer, began plying the UK’s rails last summer. Departing from London Victoria, the plushly outfitted locomotive whisks passengers away to the nation’s most scenic spots, including Wales, the Lake District and Cornwall, with stops for boat tours and distillery tastings, plus cream teas served on board.

Golden Eagle Silk Road Express, Central Asia

The Golden Eagle Silk Road Express is now perhaps the chicest – and most comfortable – way to traverse the ancient trade route, with Central Asian journeys spanning up to 22 days. New itineraries diving into the history of Imperial China and ascending to the Jokhang Temple and the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace in Lhasa are planned for 2027.

Canyon Spirit, United States

The US may not be known for its extensive rail network … but it does boast one of the best train tours. The Canyon Spirit whistles its way across the epic landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and American Southwest in daily stretches of around 300 kilometres. Glass-dome coaches allow guests to take in every element of the spectacular panoramas outside.

Eastern and Oriental Express, South-East Asia

The Eastern & Oriental Express relaunched in 2024 with tempting itineraries across Malaysia, including the six-night “Tiger Express” route, which explores conservation efforts in the ancient Taman Negara rainforest. The journey also takes in Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Penang Island. Back on board, glossy green and cream carriages, an indulgent Malaysian restaurant and even a Dior-branded spa await.
