Perfection in Simplicity

The news Rolls-Royce Ghost is an exemplar of advanced technology and minimalist design on four wheels

The new incarnation of the Rolls-Royce Ghost has a lot to live up to and it fulfils the task in a most contemporary, minimalist way. The successor to the most successful product in the renowned marque’s 117-year history is the most technologically advanced model Rolls-Royce has ever made, yet it achieves this through a simplicity that belies its ground-breaking aesthetic and accoutrements. The new Ghost’s “Post-Opulent” design eschews superficial expressions of wealth, in part a reaction to a desire for a more focused, subtle substance that its clientele expects, allied to the sublime form and engineering integrity of an archetypal Rolls-Royce vehicle.

For the exterior, the lines are recognisably Rolls-Royce, yet they are carved down and refined giving a sleek and distinctive edge like no other model in the current line-up. Built on a rigid aluminium Rolls-Royce spaceframe architecture, the new Ghost possesses a new V12 engine, all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering for unprecedented poise and sure-footedness and has a revolutionary Planar Suspension system that significantly increases agility and effortlessness.

The interior also reflects the minimalist philosophy that marks the exterior. The serene cabin is typical in adhering to Rolls-Royce’s status as a luxury item, yet is distinctive in its design, most notably in the singular dashboard, created with a healthy dash of natural wood and leather, complemented by materials of the owners’ choice – bespoke remains a vital part of the Rolls-Royce experience. The stylish design is completed by a piece of mesmerising craftmanship – a high-gloss, yet subtly illuminated fascia, with the wordmark Ghost enlivened by the brilliance of 850 three-dimensional stars while the car is motion, which dim once it comes to a standstill.

Visual aesthetics aside, The Ghost is also a study of perfection in engineering, something exemplified by the use of finely crafted acoustic science to enhance the driving experience. Alongside around 100kg of insulation used to block outside sound, Rolls-Royce engineers have investigated the resonance of internal components, aligning the frequencies so that the entire car “sings” in harmony - something Rolls-Royce calls ‘The Whisper’.

It such unity of purpose and attention to the smallest detail that make the Ghost a paragon of simplistic excellence.
