Taprobane Island
Exotic paradise on the edge of the world
With nothing but open water between Taprobane Island and the South Pole, a feeling of being perched on the edge of the world here would be understandable. Exuding mysticism, this Sri Lankan island sits as a lush, tree-covered speck abutting Weligama Bay – accessible by foot, wading through 200 yards of shallow crystal waters or, for some, exotically atop an elephant. Home to a vast, octagonal house of five en-suite rooms – airy, bright spaces that make full use of the two-acre island’s locale, the home sprawling out to shaded terraces and verandas to sun oneself, and a winding, lush tropical garden with sandy pathways exploring the grounds.
