Hotel du Vin Edinburgh
A glow of conviviality emanates from this lean and keen contender – with a most unusual former life

A haven of civilised quietude but still less than ten minutes’ walk away from the farrago of the famed Royal Mile, the Hotel du Vin is located in what was an asylum back in the 18th century. The Scottish references avoid cliché with a finely stocked whisky bar and only the merest hint of tartan amid the stout, handsome decor – think exposed stone walls and wooden floors polished to within an inch of their lives. All the 47 rooms feature soothing 'sleigh' style beds and monsoon showers in the bathrooms though the standard rooms may be a touch too on the bijou side for some.
