Riverside Retreat
The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan offers a serene respite while remaining plugged in to the city’s electric energy
The recent opening of Waldorf Astoria’s second Shanghai property represents a landmark moment for the legendary hotelier. Situated in the New Bund central business district, the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan is strategically positioned for both business travel and the city’s many cultural highlights, including the West Bund Art Museum, Tank Shanghai, the Long Museum and the Qiantan Taikoo Li retail complex. Despite its location at the heart of the action, the hotel offers direct access to nature via the tranquil green space of the Qiantan Park and the waterfront promenade of Qiantan Youcheng Park.
As one enters the hotel, this connection with nature is maintained thanks to the sweeping views across the Huangpu River, perfectly framed through large windows that flood the interior with light. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) and Cheng Chung Design (CCD), Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan reinterprets the city’s Art Deco heritage with striking contemporary vision.

Each of the 204 rooms and suites measures at least 52 square metres and is decorated in a soothingly minimalist style, creating an intimate, comfortable ambience in which to relax and recoup. Most accommodations boast generous balconies overlooking the river, and select suites feature outdoor Jacuzzis. Further rejuvenation comes from wellness amenities spanning a 25m pool lit by a skylight window, a state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness centre, and a spa with four private treatment rooms.
The multiple in-house eateries serve a variety of cuisines to delight every palate and mood, crafted using the finest ingredients. Arame centres on modern European fare, from everyday brunches to seafood dinners showcasing cutting-edge culinary techniques, while Fu Cheng, led by Michelin-starred chef Justin Yang, focuses on refined Min cuisine rooted in Quanzhou traditions. On the top floor, the Starlight Room’s open kitchen plates exquisite, elevated gastronomy in full view of diners at the reservation-only chef’s table, against the stunning backdrop of the Shanghai West Bund skyline. The signature Peacock Alley lounge rounds out the offering with a broad selection of hot and cold beverages and creative pastries.
The Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan provides the ideal base for travellers to explore the fascinating metropolis while simultaneously providing a haven from it. Its unique blend of serenity, style and a sense of place fully embodies the ever-evolving spirit of the city it calls home.
