In Search of Silence
Rooted in long-standing traditions, Beniya Mukayu, a boutique onsen ryokan, has evolved with the times to offer a unique stay melding comfort, luxury and a deep sense of heritage.

Venture to the charming onsen hot-spring town of Yamashiro, in Japan’s Ishikawa prefecture, and you’ll stumble across Beniya Mukayu, a boutique onsen ryokan (Japanese inn). Founded in 1928, the third and fourth generation currently helms this family-run business – Mr and Mrs Nakamichi and their two sons – and remains dedicated to the truest form of Japanese hospitality, or omotenashi.

The ryokan, beautifully redesigned by architect Sey Takeyama, lies in the foothills of Yakushiyama, enfolded by mountain forests. Led by the idea that there is “richness in emptiness”, the minimalist, nature-inspired design makes for a calming, cosy atmosphere enjoyed by guests staying in its 16 rooms, all of which boast a private onsen bath.

Inspiration awaits at every corner. The state-of-the-art kaiseki cuisine offers yet another dimension of beauty, serving dishes made with the very best local and seasonal ingredients, impeccably prepared to respect tradition. There are also three carefully curated themed libraries to discover as well as intriguing works of art spread around the property.
