Most of the advice on what to wear travelling is the same for men and women: Wear layers of loose fitting, comfortable clothes and you'll look and feel reasonably fresh and rested upon arrival. But what if you're on a business trip and don't have time to freshen up or change at the hotel before your first meeting? Or, the frequent traveller's nightmare, what if your luggage gets lost and you have to make do for a couple of days with what you have on you because there's no time to go shopping. That's where smart, functional travel clothing and accessories come into play, offering comfort, style and versatility.

Betabrand pants for travelling

The Travelteq travel jacket, for example, is light, comfortable and reversible, with one side offering a more casual, the other a more formal look that will – in a pinch – do for a business meeting. The same goes for the ingenious dresspant sweatpants by Betabrand, made from French terry fabric. Not only are they comfortable on a  long plane, train or car journey, they also won't wrinkle, but will pass as suit pants (just about). A matching blazer is already in the works. Wear Travelwrap's comfy cashmere socks to warm against air conditioned cabins (dark colours that won't clash with a business outfit are available from autumn). Meanwhile, the best insurance against being left without the appropriate clothes due to lost luggage is a well-packed carry-on bag. These new travel bags by Anya Hindmarch bespoke luggage are roomy enough to fit a full outfit to change into upon arrival (including your favourite watches, which you can keep safe in a Thomas Lyte watch roll), as well as all your on-board essentials. The electronic Tumi luggage scales will help you ensure that you pack all you can, but not too much.
