The Watch To Watch

Tag Heuer Monaco Mikrograph For Only Watch 2011

Tag Heuer Monaco Mikrograph watch

Novelty and exclusivity are two terms that sum up the values of today’s high-end watch industry, and both are embodied in the Only Watch charity auction. Held every other year, this event requires participating brands to donate a totally unique watch that will be auctioned to benefit medical research on children’s Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The 2011 Only Watch event will be held in Monaco in September, where 40 brands will donate one-of-a-kind watches. One entrant to keep an eye on is this Tag Heuer Monaco Mikrograph, a design based on the limited edition Carrera Mikrograph watch.

Special in the Mikrograph watch family is the movement Tag Heuer designed: a mechanical device that has a chronograph, or stopwatch, able to measure 1/100 of a second. The fastest on the market, this automatic movement has two separate escapements, one for telling the time and one for measuring it. The latter runs at a frequency of 50 hertz, or about 360,000 beats per hour.

An exclusive one-off piece, the Monaco Mikrograph hints at future design directions Tag Heuer will likely pursue within the Monaco watch ranges. This includes the updated 43mm wide steel case design and the wonderfully modern three-dimensional dial. Symmetry is valued in the layout, while legibility is mixed with a rich series of levels, colors and textures to stimulate the imagination. This is truly a design lover’s timepiece.

Presentation box for the Monaco Mikrograph designed by Paul du Toit

The singular auction-only Monaco Mikrograph will be presented in a box designed by well-known South African artist Paul du Toit. We're both curious and optimistic about the auction value this one-of-a-kind timepiece and artistic presentation box will yield at the 2011 Only Watch auction.
