Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Ivoire Watch

Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Ivoire Watch

A glance at Laurent Ferrier’s Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral timepiece offers a view of something instantly recognisable. Perhaps a name for it eludes us, but we feel as though we have seen this before. The Galet Classic has a very suitable name because Laurent Ferrier wished to perfect the design ideal rather than build something from scratch.

Laurent Ferrier Galet Classic Ivoire Watch

Pictures do not serve the Galet Classic watch justice. The wonderfully smooth case has the surface of a polished pebble, being both attractive and comfortable on the wrist. Available in various precious materials, the case is 41mm wide and 9.5mm thick with a domed sapphire crystal that seamlessly blends with the bezel.

All versions of the Galet Classic feature supreme legibility. Our favourite model uses an onyx dial with printed bright white numerals and hands, while this newest model uses a baked grand feu enamel dial in an ivory tone. The dial baseplate is in 18kt gold, while the printed Roman numeral hour indicators and hands are painted black for high-contrast legibility. Small details like the recessed subsidiary seconds dial and semi-transparent branding on the dial are elegant features that upgrade the look of the pocket watch-inspired dial design.

Grand feu enamel, off-white dial

The off-white dial mixes nicely with 18kt rose gold case and attached brown alligator strap, which features an Alcantara leather lining. Leaving it at that, the Galet Classic Ivoire is a beautiful high-end timepiece. Turning the watch over, you will see why it merits discussion. Laurent Ferrier is principally a traditional mechanical movement maker, and the Galet Classic features their extremely beautiful calibre FBN 916.01 manually wound “double spiral” tourbillon. To increase accuracy and rate results over time, the movement features a rare double set of balance springs that operate in reserve of one another. This feature is difficult to notice unless you are looking for it, but certainly distinguishes this tourbillon over others.

With copious amounts of hand-finishing and décor, the movement has a power reserve of 80 hours and looks stunning through the rear of the case. In many parts of the world, a tourbillon-based movement is a symbol of status and wealth, but to watch lovers it represents dutiful craftsmanship. Many will be able to appreciate the tourbillon spinning around its own axis as seen through the sapphire crystal caseback of the watch, and only a few will be able to appreciate what makes this one different.
