Art Basel contemporary art fair kicks off its 43rd edition
Contemporary Art world converges at Art Basel in Switzerland
Art Basel, the world’s premier art show for modern and contemporary works, is taking place in Switzerland for the 43rd consecutive year.
On the banks of the Rhine River, close to the border between France and Germany, the traditional city of Basel attracts art collectors, art dealers, artists and curators alike. All of a sudden, the city transforms into a dazzling, lively and vibrant place that hosts some of the most exciting performances, exhibitions and events spread out all over the region. It offers a cultural richness of a truly exceptional kind.
Founded back in 1970 by gallerists who wanted to present their portfolio of artists in the right environment, Art Basel turns into the world centre of art, a unique platform to experiment as well as see and feel what art is. Out of 1,000 applications, the Art Basel Committee (an international jury represented by the world's foremost gallery owners) has selected 300 galleries from 36 countries to stage works from more than 2,500 artists for this year's show, which runs until June 17th.
Almost all of the galleries who have appeared before come back again for the next show, but every year there are a couple of new entries. New this year exhibiting in Hall 2 (a landmark building from the 1950s built by Hans Hoffmann) are Miguel Abreu Gallery from New York, Chemould Prescott Road from Mumbai, Galerie Mehdi Chouakri from Berlin, Thomas Dane Gallery from London and Long March Space from Peking – to mention just a few.
Whereas in Hall 1, a complex built in 1999 by Swiss architect and art collector Theo Hotz, the Art Unlimited, the Art Statement and the Art Basel Conversations are taking place.
If you plan to come over for the weekend, don’t forget to bring the kids along. While you walk through the different exhibition segments, Art Basel offers a free daycare and playroom for children aged 3-13, including food and drinks. The little ones are supervised by professional staff, allowing you to enjoy the best of the best art while meeting artists and getting inspired.
