The top retreats for 2012 in California's oldest wine valley
California's Sonoma Valley has a lot to brag about. Having withstood the test of time and Prohibition, it can claim to be the birthplace of California wine. It now hosts the oldest wineries in what is perhaps the only world-renowned viticulture state in the US, making Sonoma Valley one of the top places west of Bordeaux to swill a native vintage. As summer settles in, signalling the start of warm weather festivities that culminate in the September harvest, it's time to take advantage of hotel retreat packages that let you worry about your favourite varietals and nothing else. We've scouted out the best of the best.
Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa
You don't have to cross the border for some spice of life, because this colonial casa-inspired resort has it all – a championship golf course, a Michelin-star restaurant, European spa of regional renown and private thermal mineral springs. If you prefer wine over water, you'll want to take the Sonoma Valley Winemaker Signature package, which books you into one of the hotel's six vino-themed suites, each designed with a local family winery in mind. Other perks include a private VIP wine tour of two viticulture estates of your choice and access to the spa's signature bathing ritual. If your inner voice starts nagging about all the indulgence, just jump into one of the hotel's classes teaching Qigong, Zumba, Pilates and several types of Yoga.

Hotel Les Mars
A quiet boutique hotel in Healdsburg, about an hour north of San Francisco, the Hotel Les Mars experience is one of classic catered luxury, and one that's artfully embodied in their two-night Equine Adventure retreat. The package is everything you want for stolen hours of romance: exclusive, private and delicious. Following French continental breakfast every morning, you'll have a cheese and wine reception in the afternoon and in-room spa treatments when you like. At the Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards and Winery just 15 minutes down the road, you'll climb onto a sleek mount and tour the estate with vistas of the Alexander Valley and Chalk Hill Appellations. The leisurely trotting tour will conclude with a walking visit to Proprietor Bill Foley's private hidden cellar where an expert will guide you through a tasting of some of his specialty vintages paired with artisan cheese.

Inn at Occidental
Heirlooms, quilts and antiques populate the nooks and crannies at this high-class country bed and breakfast, a top choice for discerning travellers who need some down-home down time. The cliché of the uncultured country lot certainly doesn't ring true here, as they know how to put together an oenophile's wine package to remember. Over four nights and three days, the Ultimate Sonoma Wine Country Experience will have you tippling vintages with cheese at nightly receptions and dining at Sonoma's top eateries. The high points, however, are a five-hour tour of boutique wineries Russian River and Dry Creek with ample samples, and a hot air balloon ride over Sonoma Wine Country that ends in a champagne brunch. To top it off, the last day winds down with a Swedish massage – because quaffing the best of the valley is hard work.

When the hands have done their work, it's time for the taste buds to take over, and seemingly every meal involves a special guest or noteworthy locale: a demonstration dinner, a winemaker's dinner, even a private dinner at Thomas Keller's legendary French Laundry. Best of all, oenophiles will enter the promised land with a varied and ultra-exclusive wine program, including a degustation and education by Domaine Carneros as well as tours and tastings at cult wineries like Opus One and Domain Chandon.
