Wally's eco-friendly 'Better Place', world’s largest carbon fibre sloop

Wally debuts 'Better Place', world’s largest carbon fibre sloop

Wally Yachts was born out of a passion for performance, design and the sea; we would simply call it the Wally ethos. Luca Bassani Antivari, the founder and president of the firm, as well as a passionate yachtsman for almost all of his life, began designing and building custom yachts in 1991, when he had a vision for his own sailing yacht in mind.

The company was officially founded in 1994, and has since created legendary yachts that win spectacular races in the best sailing destinations in the world. From the cool tender and the perfect lunch boat, through to the legendary Wally Power, a fast and furious motor yacht, nothing really compares to the look of a Wally. Now, they're welcoming another vessel into the family, the record-setting Better Place.

"With Better Place, once again Wally opens a new route in yacht design and innovation", Bassani enthusiastically announced on May 1st in Ancona during the launch of the world’s largest carbon fibre sloop. According to him, Wally has succeeded in delivering an environmentally friendly breakthrough sailing yacht.

Indeed, they have come up with some very aggressive and sleek lines, created by designer Bill Tripp and his team for the round-the-world cruiser. The vessel boasts innovative concepts including big volumes associated with ultra light displacement, the latest diesel electric propulsion system, a staysail simplified system, a deckhouse with full height windows, a uniquely large open-air living area, a raised bulwark and an aft owner’s stateroom (62 square metres) with portholes and hatches on four sides and direct access to the terrace-on-the-sea. The interior was created by Wetzels Brown in Amsterdam and comprises a total living area of 700 square metres on board – 300 inside and 400 outside.

Furthermore, Better Place is the first sailing yacht that has ever completed the environmental requirements of the RINA Green Star class notation, reserved for ships that are designed, constructed and operated in such a way as to ensure maximum respect for the environment.
