Ooh Lalique!

Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace was, up until recently, a town that only the most devoted fans of René Lalique were familiar with. That's about to change with the opening of the Musée Lalique, dedicated to the work of the jeweller, artist and glassmaker in that very town where he first took up his work and where Lalique Cristal is still produced today.

No Art Déco retrospective is complete without Lalique's work, but this is the first time that more than 550 of his pieces, including drawings, jewellery, perfume bottles, tableware, lights and vases, are on display together. However, the museum doesn't just present the creations as pretty objects, but rather puts them into a historical context and sheds light on the technical aspect of glass-making.

It is only fitting that the designs, which were very modern for their time, are presented in a modern setting. Quite appropriately, the museum design itself features ample amounts of glass, natural light and even a flower garden showcasing the natural inspiration of the floral motifs so prominent in many of Lalique's beautiful pieces.

With its new museum and proximity of less than an hour's drive from both Strasbourg and Zweibrücken airports, Wingen-sur-Moder has put itself on the map – especially for all lovers of Lalique's work.
