Live Like A Monk – Or Don't

Former monastery near Cannes for sale

Chateauneuf de Grasse near Cannes, France

Once a year, the great and the good of the silver screen decamp from across the world to a city on the south coast of France. For around ten days, the tourist resort of Cannes is transformed into the epicentre of the film world, with directors, producers, critics and actors making their respective ways to the city.

With its name indelibly linked to the Cannes Film Festival, one might be forgiven for occasionally forgetting what a wonderful hinterland the city also has. In the not-too-distant hills near Cannes, there are a variety of superb properties close enough to glean a little of the city’s stardust, and far enough away to provide a touch of solitude.

One such property is the Chateauneuf de Grasse, 18 kilometres from Cannes and 28 kilometres from Nice airport, with views to the coast. Up for sale at EUR 8.8 million (even with that price tag, it is said to require “some modernisation”), it was originally a monastery and dates back to the 17th century, before it was converted to a private residence in 1907. The chateau’s structure has an edifying, weather-beaten stone appearance that one sometimes finds in former places of religious worship.

Inside one finds a combination of the modern and the traditional. Many rooms have enchanting old-style arched door and window frames, while the entrance area, with its dark wooden beams, reminds visitors of the property’s long history. The modern is more apparent in the gym, six bedrooms, three reception rooms, four bathrooms and caretaker's room.

During warmer months, however, it is the outside that is of greater interest. There is a sizeable terrace, where one can imagine long, drawn-out family lunches. After which, the outdoor pool will seem particularly inviting. And if you were to find yourself here between May 17th and 27th next year, it would be the perfect afternoon before a jaunt into town for the red-carpet treatment at the film festival.
