Alpana Gujral is an Indian jewellery designer whose signature style merges exotic Mughal period designs with modern forms. Her creations reflect the botanical artistry of mid-17th century India, each piece tracing nature’s ethereal forms – trees, flowers, plants, scrolling vines or animals – studded with sparkling or muted gemstones, carefully embellished with enamel pigments and set in precious gold. In designing classic pieces of jewellery, Gujral beautifully and successfully morphs the traditional technique of Minakari (enamelling), reviving the legacy of the Mughal Empire and transforming it in an attempt to suit contemporary tastes and preferences.

Indian jewellery designer Alpana Gujral

The Delhi School of Art alumna has carved a distinctive niche for herself as one of India’s distinguished fine jewellery designers, honing her skills and perfecting her craft for more than 25 years. She developed her design aesthetic, working alongside master craftsmen from Rajasthan, handcrafting individual and limited edition pieces – each with a four- to six-month design-to-finish timeline. While she works primarily from her studio in India’s cultural capital, she also exhibits and sells exclusively to international markets in New York, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong and Dubai.

Alpana’s latest Neelaya jewellery celebrates royalty and splendour, using the peacock as its muse. Encapsulating the multiple facets of the bird’s proud spirit, the collection fittingly symbolises beauty, purity, prosperity, wisdom, rejuvenation and immortality. The peacock motif along with the bird’s vivid and optically iridescent plumage is appositely reflected in the line consisting of collars, cuffs, earrings and cocktail rings. Rich shades of blue – turquoise, teal, cobalt and navy – dominate the collection, complementing bursts of green and red. Depending on the angle of illumination, the gemstones set against brilliant diamonds appear to change hue, sometimes intensifying and sometimes subduing, all the while retaining their elegance and charm.

Whether it is an exclusive, royal or auspicious occasion, these timeless jewels are guaranteed to add an element of mysticism and magnificence to your ensemble.
