Petroleum jewellery makes a compelling statement

Petroleum or crude oil has always been the subject of extensive global debate, whether it is increasing demand, depleting reserves, excessive regulation or spiralling prices. Yet the issue is far from resolved – and understandably so, given the non-renewable nature of the resource. Hence, it is only fitting to utilise an altogether different approach to manage consumption, one that possesses the potential to reshape thinking on conservation and protection.

During the French International Design Biennale 2008, product designers Florian Dussopt and Julie Girard of the France- and London-based Anna Gram’ Design Studio explored the idea of creating jewellery out of petroleum. At that time, however, the substance was considered unfit for series production. Recently, their collaboration with Londoner metalwork and jewellery designer Niza Huang has resulted in the design and production of an innovative, artistic and sculptural petroleum jewellery line.

The collection encompasses four breathtakingly rich forms, among them a pendant, a ring, a pair of earrings and a bangle – each one containing a precious droplet of petroleum, magnified by mineral glass and encased inside an intricate metal cocoon. In ordering a piece, clients can choose the type of metal, whether sterling silver or 18kt gold-plated sterling silver.

Simple, black and beautiful, yet capable of making a powerful style statement, each piece of jewellery carries a message to honour our planet’s finite and valuable resources, serving as a continuous reminder to the wearer and observer to limit usage and prevent misuse for the benefit of future generations.
