Overmarine celebrates 20 years of Mangusta, launches new line
Would you ever think that the very heart of the Italian yacht building could be based in a small town best known for its extravagant Carnival celebrations and world famous Carrara marble? Based at the Ligurian coast, Viareggio (although geographically facing the Tyrrhenian Sea), is a tough and hotly contested place where competition works next door to competition, including the suppliers.
The density of all of the key players working in Viareggio is intense. It's an Italian 'who’s who' of shipbuilding with prominent names such as Azimut, Codecasa, Benetti, Perini Navi, Rossi Navi, SanLorenzo and Viareggio Superyacht – all just a stone's throw away from Pisa airport. It's also home to Overmarine, whose Mangusta brand for the past 20 years has been all about cruising at a top speed of 39 knots.
At the end of last week, the US owner of the 7th unit of the 165 Mangusta saw the delivery of his 50-metre superyacht, considered to be the fastest maxi open yacht of her size ever built in the world to date. She accommodates eight guests in four cabins and will be cruising the Mediterranean this summer. In autumn, the yacht will be on display at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show.
In other exciting Mangusta news, a brand new range is expected to hit the waters soon. The 20th anniversary will be celebrated at the Viareggio-based shipyard with a brand new model, the very first unit of the full-displacement yacht leaving the yard: the Mangusta Oceanco 148, designed in collaboration with Italian star architect Carlo Colombo.
The trans-ocean-going vessel will feature a hull/superstructure in GPR composite and infusion with a range of 4,000 nautical miles, which will allow it to cross from the Mediterranean shores to America. This product marks a turning point in the company philosophy, away from 'fast and faster' towards a new eco-friendly goal: comfortable cruising at a reasonable speed of 16 knots.
