Music
Paul McCartney's Kisses On The Bottom, CD – It rings clear that this latest offering by the former Beatles and Wings man won't propel him to further acclaim than his already astronomical worth, but it is a tender look back on the musical influences and styles that influenced his career. With light vocal jazz woven throughout, McCartney's fifteenth solo album is an easy listening hit. More info on McCartney's webpages
Maverick Sabre's Lonely are the Brave, CD – He's often touted as the male Amy Winehouse, and it's easy to see why when Sabre's haunting soul-drenched voice belts out. Van Halen's A Different Kind Of Truth, CD – Van Halen's twelfth studio album – and the first album of completely new material since 1998 – should give every fan something to thrash their heads about. While some bands constantly change their sound and style, fans need not fear with this one, as many of the tracks are based on the demos and unrecorded lyrics that first got them signed to Warner Brothers records. A pure Van Halen sound and feel is guaranteed. Find out more from Van Halen online
Air's Le Voyage Dans la Lune, CD – La Voyage Dans la Lune was a groundbreaking silent film, the first to really use special effects. Once thought lost, the film was restored and aired at Cannes last year with a special soundtrack by French band Air, who were so inspired by the project they created an album based around the film. With a staple sound using synthesisers and other electronics, they were the perfect choice to interpret La Voyage Dans la Lune for this generation. More about the album on Air's webpages
Film
Hesher, DVD and Blu Ray – An indie-esque flick with a limited but big-name cast that slipped under most people's radar last year, Hesher is the story of T.J., a young boy struggling to cope with the loss of his mother in a car crash, in addition to his father's pill-popping depression. Drama ensues when he meets Hesher, a metal-head vagabond who forces his way into the family's lives and helps them – in his own bull-in-a-china-shop way. Starring Hollywood's go-to guy and gal of late, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, Hesher is a character-driven alternative to empty action blockbusters. View the film on Amazon
Real Steel, DVD and Blu-Ray – Some of the best film experiences are the ones that make you root for the characters. Boxing films are perhaps the best example, and Real Steel certainly falls into this group. Blending cutting edge motion-capture with animatronic props, the boxing is given over to robots, the 'steel' indicated in the title. While it doesn't innovate or stray too far from the tried and true formula of the heart-winning underdog, it certainly does just that: win hearts. View the film on Amazon
Fright Night, DVD and Blu Ray – Another popcorn flick to munch through, Fright Night is a re-make of the 1985 film of the same name. Utilising a few of the new hot names in Hollywood, such as Anton Yelchin, among others who give a reliably solid performance, like Colin Farrell and Toni Collette, this is one vampire film that isn't going to get teenage girls across the globe swooning – but diving behind the cushions, perhaps. Tyrannosaur, DVD and Blu Ray – The first feature film directed by Paddy Considine, this gritty British drama is a far cry from easy watching. Set in the north of England, the film depicts Joseph, an unemployed widower plagued by violence and a drinking problem who finds solace in charity shop worker Hannah, herself hiding the dark secret of an abusive marriage. Solid performances given by current stalwarts in British acting, guided by Considine's powerful and affecting story, make for a deeply gripping drama and bow-worthy directorial debut.
