Bring It Like Beckham

Victoria Beckham launches capsule collection for Net-A-Porter

Just utter the word celebrity fashion line and typically heads shake and eyes roll. Retail lore teaches this is one path often paved with questionable designs of limited appeal. So when Victoria Beckham announced in 2008 that she would launch and sell a high-end fashion collection, the skeptics pounced.

Yet the former bubblegum pop-singing Spice Girl and wife of soccer superstar David Beckham has proven herself as a serious, credible fashion entrepreneur. Along with producing denim, sunglasses and accessories, her runway collections have garnered rave reviews for their precision construction, body-con aesthetic and sophisticated silhouettes. Now twice nominated by the British Fashion Council for Designer Brand of the Year, and with sales up 70 per cent over last year, the last of the naysayers appear to have been silenced.

While Beckham has said she makes clothes she wants to wear herself, her dresses have done serious time on the red carpet, and Sarah Jessica Parker even wore a Beckham dress to the White House.

On November 2nd, Beckham is launching a capsule collection of five dresses exclusive to Net-A-Porter. The collection features reissues of her favorite designs in new colours, including a belted silk gazar dress with pleated shoulder detail in purple and a draped wool and silk blend crepe dress in cobalt blue. The clean lines and proportions of her sheaths and dresses are not what you would have expected from an ex pop starlet, but they prove Beckham indeed has the natural eye of a designer.
