Wooden bath tubs take over luxury bathrooms

Wooden bath tubs take over luxury bathrooms

Taking a bath is usually all about relaxation in a warm, friendly space, and yet most bath tub designs are hard, angular and cold. Standard baths tend to be made of cast iron, stone or ceramic – materials that are cool and hard to the touch and don't retain heat very well. As the atmosphere and feel of a bathroom is becoming more important in the course of the general spa-ification of in-house wet rooms, discerning interior decorators are increasingly turning to wooden bath tubs for a warmer, more unique look.

Many advantages of a wooden bath tub are apparent at first glance: the rich hues, natural grain and seamless solidity of wood create a unique centrepiece that really stands out. Needless to say, the look of a wooden bath tub also caters to the current trends for eco, heritage and artisan interiors. Although a bath tub made from a renewable resource is not sustainable by nature, one that is made by a local craftsman from sustainably forested wood would have an alluringly small eco footprint.

Home owners may fear the maintenance involved in keeping a wooden bath tub looking show-home-perfect, but companies that specialise in bath tubs made from wood are adamant that they are no harder to keep clean and gleaming than iron, stone or ceramic baths. The fact that numerous luxury hotels have of late opted for wooden bath tubs would seem to support those claims.

At the end of the day, for most people the decision for or against installing a wooden tub will probably be made based on aesthetics – and judging by the stunning examples shown here, that will be an easy decision to make.
