2,700-acre Dillingham Ranch on Oahu Island for sale

2,700-acre Dillingham Ranch on Oahu Island for sale

2,700-acre Dillingham Ranch on Oahu, Hawaii

The attractions of a few weeks’ break on the beaches of Hawaii are obvious. The mere mention of the name conjures up images of surf, sun and Polynesian traditions, though unfortunately probably also a 26-year-old Elvis Presley cavorting across a Blue Hawaii paradise in ‘Hawaii shirts’ for the 1961 musical film.

Located on the north shore of the island of Oahu, out of the way of tourist hotspots, Dillingham Ranch is a 2,700-acre property that takes in the natural beauty of both land and sea. Recently placed on the market (price available upon request), 19 acres of the property are within touching distance of the Mokuleia Forest Reserve and the Waianae Mountains, with the parallel side of the property extending towards beaches.

Dillingham Ranch is said to be one of the largest plots of land on Oahu, which is, of course, home to the capital of Hawaii, Honolulu (the ranch is around a 40-50-minute car ride to the capital). Built by the Dillingham family at the turn of the 20th century, the ranch’s history claims notable visitors, including British writer and actor Noel Coward, and Prince Charles, who visited to try out Dillingham’s highly rated polo facilities. Indeed, the ranch’s equestrian centre is one of the major appeals of the property, where it is claimed to be the birthplace of the sport in Hawaii in the 1800s. Features of the equestrian centre include two dressage rings, a stadium and jumping course, ranch and lakeside trails, and pasture and paddock boarding areas.

A recent renovation means that the property’s main house, Dillingham Lodge (also called the ‘Big House’), comprises eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, as well as the 3,000-square-foot Great Room and a 700-square-foot kitchen.

On the surface, it may not conform to the typical Hawaiin image, but with the beach nearby and the busy capital within easy reach (not to mention claims of having the largest coconut tree grove in Hawaii), Dillingham Ranch is as appealing as anywhere across Hawaii.
