Home of former Taoiseach of Ireland for sale
As one of his country’s most ‘colourful’ leaders, Charles Haughey is remembered as a controversial but flamboyant Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland. While allegations of corruption blight his legacy, there is no doubt that Haughey, who died in 2006 aged 80, liked to enjoy the good life.
This can be seen in the selection of his private residency, Abbeville in Kinsealy, around ten kilometres from the city centre of the county’s capital, Dublin. Haughey bought Abbeville in 1969 when it was a stud farm, though the property’s history in its current form can be traced back to 1790, when James Gandon designed it for politician John Beresford. Up for sale for EUR 7.5 million, this 247-acre estate is situated in an optimal location that lies within easy reach of the city centre and around ten minutes from Dublin Airport.
Haughey brought his own unique ideas to the house, including creating a rural-style Irish bar. The main house’s style, though, is as a Georgian mansion. On the ground floor is the reception hall, which features maple flooring and various cornicing works. This leads to the ballroom via double mahogany-panelled doors, an area that still contains Angelica Kauffmann roundels from Gandon’s design. On the same floor is the dining room, from which the gardens and lakes outside can be seen through the large bow windows.
Other features include the Malton drawing room, featuring a rococo and gothic interior, an open fireplace with carved marble and an ‘informal dining room’. With an office, living room and study also on the first ground, the main sleeping quarters are located on the first floor, including a master suite, as well as eight further bedrooms (more bedrooms are on the third floor). The basement contains a kitchen and breakfast room, sauna, a changing room for the swimming pool, a billiard room and wine cellar.
Along with the extensive gardens, one can imagine that this huge property suited Charles Haughey well: a large estate for a man with a larger than life story.
