As anyone who ever had the infectious tune from Disney's The Little Mermaid stuck in their head knows, "It's better down where it's wetter, under the sea". But although the film heroine Ariel's underwater clamshell bikini outfit was quite fetching, it was definitely under-accessorised. Now, fashion-conscious underwater enthusiasts can pay homage to marine life without compromising on style, thanks to the new Ocean collection by Swiss jeweller de GRISOGONO.

The newest playful designs from boutique jeweller Stefanie Volkmer-Otto

playful designs from boutique jeweller Stefanie Volkmer-Otto

'My Little Dragon', a handcrafted, one-off creation with 18kt white gold, diamonds and turquoise

For jewellery designer Stefanie Volkmer-Otto, only the most storied stones make the cut. The Hamburg-based ex-filmmaker turned to jewellery design after receiving a deluge of compliments on a necklace she crafted from an antique hat pin with a fox motif – the inspiration for the name of her line, Der Fuchs (German for 'the fox'). Now, Volkmer-Otto procures many of her materials from auctions, searching out pieces with a past that are carefully scrutinised by her seasoned team while she researches the history they may reveal.

Each of her works is unique, each possesses its own story of inspiration and creation. This particular piece, 'My Little Dragon', was prompted by a picture that Volkmer-Otto's five-year-old son drew for her. At the opening of her jewellery gallery, the clever little artist conjured a dragon to watch over and protect the collection, an image that Volkmer-Otto has re-created here with two dragons of white gold and diamonds jealousy guarding their turquoise pendants.

Stunning Calleija jewellery inspired by Aston Martin car

Stunning Calleija jewellery inspired by Aston Martin car

  • The Aston Martin One-77 supercar
  • 'Calleija for Aston Martin' Astar earrings

Birds, flowers, Russian ballets – we've seen a lot of things inspire jewellery collections, but cars? This may be a first. Leave it to a mastermind like Australian jewellery designer John Calleija to find a spark of imagination in the metal-and-rubber domain of auto-making, but then again, he did have a lot to work with in Aston Martin's sexy new Supercar, the One-77.

Fittingly limited to 77 pieces, the 'Calleija for Aston Martin Collection' took six years to develop, and Calleija was so inspired by the car – the grille of the car, to be specific – that he invented an entirely new cut of gemstone, the Astar, to mimic it.

Some say women have the edge in poker. They're often more intuitive, coy and, especially when playing at a male-dominated table, they've got sympathy and sex appeal on their side. Some even argue that women can better detect nuances in facial expression, emotion and tones in the human voice, which let them know when to call a fellow player's bluff.

Whether or not that's all true, any lady would certainly have a leg up on style with this stunning and slightly unusual collection of rings by Swiss haute jeweller Adler. The pieces are inspired by the nature of poker, a blend of discretion and show, strategy and luck. Of course, little about this collection is discreet, because with ice like this, any wearer will be showing everyone her hand.

Van Cleef & Arpels offer open courses in jewellery making

Van Cleef & Arpels offer open courses in jewellery making

  • A classroom of l'École Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery school
  • Students at l'École Van Cleef & Arpels will develop a discerning eye for gems

Practically every trade has its secrets, the mythical and mystical whispers that pass from master to apprentice, but few guard theirs quite so jealously and pridefully as the jeweller. Working for the world's wealthy and powerful, jewellers are an elite clan of artists who must consider not only the stone in their hand and the vision in their head, but the wearer who will don their creations. Theirs is a transformational art, one meant to bring more life to its living mount.

Recently, Van Cleef & Arpels announced the opening of the l'École Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery school, where a progression of à la carte courses gives pupils a glimpse into this hush-hush art of jewellery making, imparting a keen eye for stones and an appreciation of the craftsmanship that goes into turning them from rocks into glittering works of art.

Eliane Fattal's spring line of reconstructed antique jewellery

Eliane Fattal's spring line of reconstructed antique jewellery

As the first green sprigs appear on trees, inhabitants of the northern hemisphere can once again dare to dream of spring and how it blankets the world in newness – and a little pollen. Just in time to celebrate the season's power of renewal, British jewellery designer has released her second collection. Blooming with a floral motif, the 'Pensée' line evokes a springtime sense of rejuvenation, yet heirloom materials like 19th century enamel speak of the past.

'Pensée' encompasses eight unrepeated pieces, among them five rings, a necklace and a pair of earrings. But in our opinion, the most want-worthy of all is Fattal's unique creation made for the bare foot. Best paired with a flowing bohemian skirt, it's got us longing for an open field of flowers and an acoustic guitar.
