Prove Your Prowess On The Track In A To-Scale F1 Simulator
Come May 10th, will you be there, focusing all of your mental energy into willing Vettel, Räikkönen, Hamilton or Alonso on? Admittedly, there's virtually a whole season ahead of them all, so the nail-biting may be at a minimum for now, but no doubt there must be times when – either inwardly or very vocally – you think "I could do better than that!" Well, Formula 1 fans, prove it.
Fujifilm’s X100s – the follow-up to the mighty X100
Fujifilm’s follow-up to the mighty X100
The Fujifilm X100 sits comfortably atop the compact camera mountain, sharing the view with stablemates such as Leica’s X2 in the premium compact niche. It is a deserved place for a worthy camera, but two years have passed since its commercial launch, and the Tokyo-based company have seen fit to supersede the X100 with its successor, the X100s.
Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera
Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera
The ability to record near cinema-quality footage from a compact device would be something of a golden egg for the cinematographically inclined. A device that while ever useful for the professionals, begins to blur the lines into the personal consumer arena – and the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera is arguably leading the way.
Philips introduces DesignLine minimalist glass television
Philips introduces minimalist glass television
There was always likely to be a tipping point in the design of televisions. As our flat screens get thinner, and the bezels disappear into a sliver of obscurity, there appears to be just one frontier left – to do away completely with a frame and leave us with a glorious glass panel that wouldn't look amiss in an art installation. But when will this day come? June for those in the UK, and we can all thank Philips.
Centurion readers sound off on transportable tech
Centurion readers sound off on transportable tech
These days, popping open a laptop in a public place can make you feel like a dinosaur surrounded by savvy tablet users. As tablets get smaller and smartphone screens expand, more users are migrating to touchscreen technology for keeping connected on the go. How do you prefer to be 'plugged in' en route?
10% of survey respondents stick to their guns, reaching for the trusty laptop to get things accomplished while on the road. More readers – 27% – have converted to tablet devices as their main means, while 29% say their smartphones are great for getting the job done.
With 32% of participants responding 'combination of the above', though, it seems safe to say there's not yet one end-all device that meets every mobile need – as illustrated by one user of the 2% who supplied their own answer: "I never travel without laptop, tablet AND smartphone with each device serving a different need. These devices enable and truly empower our lifestyles".
Turning our focus to travel, we'll be polling you on your favourite must-see destinations across the world, touching on four continents over the next four weeks. First up: the metropolises of Europe.
Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theatre: the sound your iPad deserves
Portable sound your iPad deserves
The iPad pretty firmly holds steadfast on its pedestal as the go-to tablet device for whittling away the hours. Other gadgets are available, naturally, but as the genre-defining device, it is an institution – something peripheral makers have acknowledged in abundance. And for every handful of unnecessary, ill-conceived iPad accessories, there is one diamond in the rough.
Belkin – perhaps most recognisable for their networking gadgets – have paired with mobile audio specialists Audifi to create their own cacophonous gem: the Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theatre.
LG releases the super-thin OLED 55EM9700 TV screen
LG releases a groundbreaking new screen for the New Year
For a great number of years, the most innovation one would likely see in the somewhat stagnant world of flat-screen television manufacturing was an increased screen size and a decrease in unit depth – welcome changes, but hardly groundbreaking. LCD and plasma screens are well and good in large sizes, but when a better technology comes to maturity, it’s worth sitting up and noticing.
Out blowing their proverbial trumpet as the first manufacturer to bring us living-room worthy OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) televisions, LG have proudly announced their 55EM9700 is now available for order. Razor thin at 4.5mm, the 55-inch screen is the first of a couple flagship models to come from the South Korean manufacture this year –an 84-inch 4K capable set should follow later in the year.
