High-end watchmakers love themed collections. There seems to be an automatic, almost built-in purpose when building sets of items around events, genres or themes – a purpose that does not need to be explained or justified to consumers and hopefully also contains built-in demand.
This new set in the Limelight collection from Piaget is meant to honour the four seasons, because who doesn’t enjoy the passing seasons? The simple element of the human experience gives us reason to pay attention to this lovely collection of artistic high-end ladies watches, but don’t forget: these watches also dance.
Limelight Dancing Light watches feature a smaller central dial for the time surrounded by a spinning ring offered in various designs. This ring is weighted like the rotor in an automatic movement, but is purely whimsical in this collection, as the watches contain Piaget Swiss quartz movements. These rings are set against a background of mother-of-pearl marquetry in various colours and spin with the movement on the wearer’s wrist. Simple in design, these spinning rings are wonderfully imaginative on each of the Limelight Dancing Light watches.
Piaget designed the timepieces to appeal universally to women wanting a timeless, yet youthful wrist adornment. The case itself is 39mm wide with a lug-less design that has the white satin strap attached directly to the case. There is even no visible crown, as it is hidden on the back of the watch. With an elegant case design, Piaget is free to be much more playful with the dial.
Each Limelight Dancing Light Four Seasons watch comes in 18kt white gold with diamond décor on the bezel and in the dial. Each watch contains between 72 to 128 diamonds. The mother-of-pearl marquetry is gorgeous, with the brand taking full advantage of multi-hued materials. The Spring watch employs a ring of butterflies over pink and green. Summer is our favourite with bees and the flowers that attract them against the motif of white summer clouds, while fall dazzles with gold in three colours representing the changing autumn leaves. The Winter piece is more sombre in water blue-hued mother-of-pearl with gold snowflakes moving around the face of the watch. Finally, a Piaget suitable for any time of year.
