Since its transition to democracy in the 1970s, Spain has become one of Europe’s major tourist destinations. At the same time, it has become a favoured place for Europeans to buy a second home, even retire to.
The big cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Seville hold obvious appeal as locations to buy a property, mainly because these are the places ‘discovered’ while visiting the country on business or pleasure. But for the more seasoned traveller, Spain truly becomes fascinating when one heads away from the cityscape, either to the countryside or to one of the better smaller towns.
Canet de Mar is located on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, around 50 kilometres north of Barcelona. Though it is a tourist attraction in itself, it does not see the numbers that can wear down even the most hardy traveller to a big city. Its streets are characterised by a series of Modernist buildings, while Playa del Passeig, Playa del Llevant and Canet are three choice beaches.
The area is steeped in history, something that can be seen in this stunning estate, which offers a heady combination of fine living in a beachside location. The castle’s foundations can be traced back to the Roman Empire, with many rebuilds and renovations bringing it to its current romantic, castellated appearance, which was so popular across Europe in the nineteenth century.
With its flamboyant, heritage-inspired interior, one could be forgiven for being overwhelmed. But as well as a high-class property, this is a modern home with all the mod cons expected, as well as superbly decorated living quarters, dining areas and bedroom suites – even the caretaker's house has four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the castle's swimming pool is perfect on a lazy day when the nearby beach seems like too much effort. And, of course, a key attraction to Canet de Mar is that, with Barcelona less than an hour away, an outing to the big city is always at hand.
